1. What is the origin and background of the brand, Skin Need - Your Private Formula?
In the heart of the brand lies the belief that beauty comes from wellness, and to achieve sustainable wellness we must first understand our skin behavior, its needs, and treating it with carefully considered ingredients formulated into safe and potent skin formulations.

The face care line is manufactured in California, USA, in a cGMP certified site. To meet the rising market demand in Asia, as the formula is specially created for skin to thrive in sub-tropical to tropical climates, a cGMP certified site in Hong Kong is under establishment to expand the line to include body care and specialty products, reducing carbon footprints brought about by logistics, yet without compromising on product safety, efficacy, and quality.

2. There are so many skin care brands out there, what are the most important features of Skin Need - Your Private Formula?
We strive to deliver skin care that are customizable, as we believe in Your Private Formula - our tagline - and that is exactly the reason why we have created over 30 products in our face care line that can be mixed, matched, and freely blended to meet the needs of the skin based on changes in weather, skin condition, body condition etc.

Although we appreciate nature for the nutrients it offers in abundance, we also believe in scientific advancement and the benefits it brings to skin care. We only choose novel ingredients with strong scientific support on safety and efficacy, such that nature and science can synergize to deliver optimal and sustainable wellness.

3. Why are Skin Need serums separated into 2 categories?
We are very meticulous about the functionality of our products and their mechanistic behavior when applied onto the skin. Since our skin is composed of distinct layers with contrasting needs and behavior, our serums are designed to consider skin types as well as the target layer the product aims to reach, thereby separated into humectants and emollients to indicate hydrating vs. moisturizing as primary functions.

For hydrating formulas, naturally derived Hyaluronic Acid is our star ingredient as it is one of the most hydrophillic (holds up to 1000 times of water of its weight!) and naturally occurring humectants present in the human skin. For emollients, we use olive derived Squalane and on occasion ceramides, in which both are natural components of the skin's barrier protection to nourish, protect, and fortify the skin. The concept is to use what is original to the body to minimize allergic reactions, as well as maximizing body utilization of ingredients.

4. Can you elaborate more on Hyaluronic Acid and Squalane?
Hyaluronic Acid is a unique glycosaminoglycan (GAG) that is responsible for hydrating the skin and maintaining its suppleness. It also serves to facilitate nutrient transport as it holds water and allow active ingredients to efficiently be delivered into various skin layers. It is highly hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, gentle and calming, and is suitable to be used on all skin types. All our skin humectants are composed of a proprietary blend of Hyaluronic Acid as bases, replacing glycerin, glycols, or water in many commercial skin care to offer much better product performance.

Squalane is also a naturally occurring substance in the human skin, and our barrier protection layer is actually composed of 18% squalane. Skin Need offers 100% Squalane serum derived from hand-picked, high quality, and organic Kalamata olives, that can fortify our barrier protection, while providing anti-oxidizing and skin smoothing benefits. Unlike many skin care oils that are often rich and heavy, Squalane is extremely lightweight and is a universal blendable to be added into any Skin Need serums, moisturizer, sun screen, or masks to increase nourishing properties of any product.

5. Can you Hyaluronic Acid and Squalane be applied around the eye area?
Yes, our 100% Hyaluronic Acid can be used around the eye area, and this is applicable for all skin types. When using 100% Squalane for normal to dry skin types, blend squalane with any hyaluronic acid based serums or moisturizers before gently applying onto the skin. Both formulas are gentle and mild and does not irritate skin around the eyes.

6. Skin Need formulas seem to be very lightweight, does it really work well or is it active enough for the skin?
Heavier or richer does not mean the product is more active or effective, and on the contrary, sometimes it can mean that the molecular weight of the product is too high to be absorbed by the skin; in fact, studies have shown that over 60% of what we apply on skin surface actually just sits there, and in worse cases even lead to congestion and breakouts. Our skin care formulas -albeit lightweight- is rich in plant hydrosols, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to activate repair, protection, and modulation of the skin.

We've also devised an art of skin care layering to apply skin care layer by layer, from light to rich, to tone, hydrate, activate, moisturize, and UV guard the skin. The result is a comfortable and perfect balance of moisture in the skin, without drying the skin out or weighing the skin down.

7. What products do you recommend for sensitive skin that's also oil-prone or breakout-prone?
Oil-prone and breakout-prone skin associated with skin sensitivity can be tricky, as over moisturizing worsens breakout while excessive oil-control aggravates sensitivity. Therefore, it is extremely important for oil-prone and breakout-prone skin associated with sensitivity to balance skin moisture levels while steering clear of products that contain denatured alcohol, SLS, SLES, fragrance, silicone-derivatives etc to maintain healthy skin.
 

For cleansing, SLS and SLES free Deep Cleanser is a perfect fit. It contains naturally refreshing astringents such as Lemongrass and Cucumber to purify the skin as well as help clear up pores.

For serum, Hyaluronic Acid + B5 is the one to go, as it effectively hydrates the skin to curb sebum production, while binding cells together so skin appears plump, supple, and glowing.

For moisturiser, Hydra Smooth Essence is suitable as it contains rice bran extract to nourish and fortify the skin, yet it's feathery light texture balances oil-prone skin. (For breakout-prone skin, use Aloe Vera Ginseng Extract.)

In the daytime, use any Skin Need Physical Sunblock, as they are non-comedogenic and protects skin against free radicals and UV rays without clogging your pores.

8. Can Hyaluronic Acid + B5 Mask be used overnight?
This mask is suitable for all skin types to gradually deliver moisture deep into the skin. It is perfect after invasive procedures, and for dry skins, a wonderful sleeping mask that replenishes moisture overnight.

9. Why does Push Up Mask give an instant whitening effect? Does it contain bleaching ingredients to achieve the result?
Push Up Mask contains a high concentration of Swiss Apple Stem Cells and White Lotus Extract that offer abundant super nutrients to plump our skin. It has been shown that Swiss Apple Stem Cells accelerate cellular turnover to produce brighter skin, while White Lotus Extract is rich in Vitamin C that lightens and balances skin tone, delivering a potent and instant skin whitening effect.

10. Why does Oil Free Moisturizer with SPF 18 offers such low UV protection? Which UV product should I use if I want something very very lightweight yet tinted?
Our Oil Free Moisturizer with SPF 18 is truly an oil - as well as silicon - free formula that offers the freshest UV protection for those who have oil-prone or breakout-prone skin. However, since the main UV blockers in this formula are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide which are best dissolved in oils, this feature of both these ingredients have posed a limitation on how high the SPF can go. However, if you have very congested skin due to excessive sebum production, this UV is highly recommended as its oil-free property goes fresh and light on the skin without aggravating sebum production or breakouts.

For a lightweight and comfortable tinted formula, feel free to mix and match by blending Oil Free Moisturizer with SPF 18 with any of our tinted formulas.

Good manufacturing practices (GMPs) are guidelines that provide a system of processes, procedures and documentation to assure a product has the identity, strength, composition, quality and purity that appear on product claims. It is the gold standard for product quality assurance which we strive to maintain on every batch of production.

Our cGMP / ISO 22716 certified infrastructures provide clean room facility, dust particle controlled manufacturing areas, and our water purity is on par with U.S. Pharmacopoeia.

14. I've been using the same routine for over a year and noticed results are not as noticeable as before. What should I do?
